Today in Ultern the delicious smell of Petal Cookies may waft throughout! It looks like there's someone out there already practicing for the upcoming Harvesting Bonds Festival by baking a lot of cookies. Like, a lot! So much so they've set up advertising free cookies for all in a variety of colors, flavors and shapes too!

Why not go ahead and take a few? It looks like there's plenty of Ulternians and Drifters alike already enjoying some without any signs of adverse effects anyway-

... did you see Bashou yet? Found him running around, preachin' the life-changing qualities of the biscuits. Talking to strangers of his own free will. Smilin' like he's got part of his brain removed. Y'know, acting totally normal, just his everyday self. He isn't even getting paid for it. I thought he was being blackmailed or coerced into this somehow, I was gonna give whoever's responsible a big ol' hug— [Said in the most threatening tone possible, which just makes it funnier.] ... but, no, it's just these biscuits, man.

[His smile returns as quickly as it departed and he makes a show of acting innocent, putting his hands behind his back and humming. He was fond of dry flavors so he’d gotten an extra cookie as The Favorite. He was already very open about his feelings and this just made him even moreso. Mayday sighs and shakes her head.]

Bashou? No, I haven’t. [She listens diligently but…definitely starts to snicker again at that description.] Sorry, I’m sorry. That sounds like a proper mess, it’s just. You know. [It’s really funny hearing you talk like that, okay.] It’s definitely the weirdest place we’ve ever been too.

Those cookies are as powerful as they are unusual.

Mm. I’m tempted to go pocket some to test. Hey, what one did you have? Only being able to tell lies is basically as effective as a truth serum; that could be handy. [Team Rocket rule of thumb: Always Be Scheming.]

Your... Pokemon?! This place can even do somethin' like that?

[Buson is genuinely shocked and amazed. And a little disturbed he just tried to hit on a Pokemon, oh, man... that's weird. That's definitely weird, like... something out of a fairy tale. He got chills just thinking about it!

(He briefly wondered what Evie might look like as a human. She's already adorable as a Pokemon, she'd be so cute human... oh, what about his team? No, man, that's still too weird!)

The dog turned hostile and yeah, he remembers this one, after Mayday reins him in. Buson's moment of being disturbed and shocked switches to trying to intimidate the Pokemon back with a glare.]

I don't take insults from guys with such refined names. [Well, interesting he didn't go for the more obvious Pokemon issue and picked on his name, instead. He's smiling and at ease now, but he'd still like to get another jab in.]

Hey, Mayday! Thanks for reinin' in the angry wiener. Totally up for tangling with this guy, s'not like I had enough fights for one day.

[Truth serum?! Buson nodded eagerly.]

The last time I talked about...!

[Was a forced truth one, but he can't say it.]

Yeah, sure. I'll tell ya. I took one spicy one that totally didn't burn the hell outta my mouth, it was weak, I'd crush it up and put it in a baby's bottle, it was just THAT weak.

Tried to get rid of the taste with one that, kid you not, tasted like a sweet wine.

[No, it didn't... it was dry! Like a DRY wine!]

[Sarge, noticing Buson’s shock at her trainer’s words, grins and blows a little kiss.]

Sorry not sorry, big guy. ♥ For what it’s worth, you’re definitely my type.

[Mayday rolls her eyes. Yeah, that tracks. Meanwhile, Weenis doesn’t seem intimidated in the slightest.]

How about beatings? You take beatings? ‘Cause you’re definitely asking for one! You tryin’ to say Boss has bad naming sensibilities, huh?! [She had objectively very questionable ones, to say the least.] I’ll have you know she’s more clever than you could ever hope to be!!

Easy, Ween. It’s fine. You’re both sort of running your mouths a little more than you should be today. [She gives both men a cautionary “watch it” sort of look, reminiscent of a chastising parent.]

Hm. The opposite of sweet wine… that’d be, what, dry? The blue ones, yeah? I gave Weenis one of those too. That could explain that.

[She scratches her chin thoughtfully]

So if the dry ones have you acting reckless and the spicy ones make you lie… then I guess the sweet pink ones are what made this transformation happen. But why? And how?

[Buson turned very, very white, then, very, very red.

He looked very confused, swallowed hard, then nearly choked and tried to disguise it as a cough, averting his gaze and scratching the back of his neck. He absolutely still found Sarge attractive, but knowing she's a Pokemon...

Cool it! It's probably just for one day, she'll be back to being a Pokemon.

Then again...]

[At the look, Buson went rigid, standing up right and military.

Right, no more messing around! He didn't even look Mayday's way as she went on, standing at attention, but her assessment seemed to be perfectly on the mark!]

... beats me. I don't care enough to find out. [His tone's a bit too stiff and serious to read that well, so he tried to relax a bit...] The last time it happened, totally involved food. There's food every time. I wasn't just walkin' down an alley way or nothin'.

[Many of Mayday’s female pokemon had a penchant for toying around with their targets in battle, Sarge perhaps most of all. She says nothing, simply smirking devilishly back at Buson.]

Hmmm. You think the baker is in on it this time, then? But what angle could they have for doing something like this…

[Mayday seems to be thinking hard about it. Ultimately, she ruffles her hair in frustration.]

Ah, geez, what a pain in the ass.
Why don’t we just enjoy it while it lasts? It’s not every day I get the chance to talk to you!
I guess that's true. I feel kinda bad for Buson and Bashou, though. They definitely got the short end of the stick here.
So considerate! That’s my boss!
[Mayday smiles faintly, looking to Buson.] Last time this kind of thing happened, did it just wear off on its own?

[Buson smiled more warmly now, even if it still looked crooked, like many of his smiles, the look in his eyes is gentle and fond.

He noded in response to her question, then went on:]

... do you think you can only have fun if everyone else is too? [He's speaking in a gentle, reassuring tone..]

It's not like this place is an escape, we're not on vacation. You always gotta be responsible for everybody? That sounds a great way not to miss out on all the fun in life! I mean, your Pokemon turning human and talkin'? Bet you see that everyday!

[Firmly and resolutely:]Bashou... isn't someone that needs to be worried about.

I know I don't really look or sound reliable, but...
[Keeping Bashou safe is his duty. He can be relied on to do that.]

[Mayday stares at Buson, blinks, then smiles a little sheepishly.]

…Heh. I know you’ve got things on lock, but that doesn’t mean I don’t worry. What can I say. I don’t really give an toss about most of these randos, but looking out for other Rockets is just second nature to me. Hell, it’s literally part of my job now.

Ahh, you really work too hard, Chief.

[The former water type reaches over and pinches her trainer’s cheek in affectionate admonishment.]

Oy!
He’s right, you know. It’s okay to let loose once in a while.
Yeah! We should go do something fun together!

[Sarge lets go, smiling appreciatively at Buson.]

You should come too. If you want, that is.

[Other Rockets. Hearing her say that, his heart hurt, and he felt a twinge of guilt. Team Rocket as family… she reminded him of the way he used to be.

He still is a member, technically, and can’t really leave, back home, but…

He doesn’t want to ruin her fun, by talking about it now, she just started to relax a little…

Maybe if all of Team Rocket was like Mayday…]

Bein’ seen as a weapon, a soldier, cannon fodder… that’s new.
I wish you were the only executive in Team Rocket, even back home. The higher up you go in the ranks, the friendlier they get… banding together like that, seeing each other as family, only the strong and powerful got that.

[He sounded strangely wistful, but nodded, at last, to Sarge and smiled at Mayday again. He’ll come with!]

Boss is really one of a kind!
[Mayday was Weenis’ favorite topic and he was eager for the chance to expound on her virtues.]

I don’t know if I’d go that far. Maybe I’m still too tender-hearted to cut it as an Executive. [Mayday you’re a thief and a murderer, I don’t know if tender-hearted is really the word to use. But no, I get your point, go on.] Maybe in a few years time, I’ll be a total stone cold bitch too. But until then, I want to support the family that supported me - all of them. That’s the sort of Team Rocket I believe in.

B-Bosssss~
[Weenis, moved to tears by this declaration, tackles Mayday into a hug. She struggles at first but quickly gives in. Affection is inevitable, resistance is futile. Sarge watches with a fond smile.]

So where are we headed?
Mmm, want to check out Rainbow Plaza? That seems like an interesting experience for two newly minted humans. I’ve actually never been. …Well, never been for fun.

[He understands completely. He's not without a sense of compassion, although his job demands the same as Mayday's did: a lot of violence and murder. Her words are touching... and it just upsets Buson even more. He can't control himself, although he wanted not to ruin this outing for her, he loved seeing Mayday in a more light-hearted mood, but...]

Y-yeah, let's go... [Distracted, trying to fight himself, but he can't, as if the words are being forced out of him! It's like the time he couldn't lie, only now, his words and body weren't fully in his control, acting recklessly!]

His hands curl into fists and he stares at them as he walks instead of where he's going or looking at Mayday.]

I... was tellin' the truth, that time, about missin' the sound. When you were talkin' about breakin' jaws or whatever.

The truth is... I love beating people up. I really do enjoy it, even if I make a big show'a not liking it.

[Hey, hey... he looked a little frightened at what he was admitting to.]

... I... know it's all we got, it's family, but, the truth is... I'm perfectly happy being a Team Rocket member. It's not like I was livin' like I quit for the past half year. I know as well as you do, I'm sure, how easy it is to leave for us higher-ranking members, so I got nothin' to fear. Any time I go home, it's back to the same old job, because I AM a rat and a traitor.

[He did NOT want to say that. He went from frightened to furious and deeply insulted. He might have a lot of regrets, he might not truly fit in anymore, but he's never ratted anyone out in his life! His voice goes from quiet to steadily increasing in volume and even his gestures become more animatedly insistent, desperate.]

If I never leave, it's not because of anyone else!! I have plenty of other options! I could make it out there alone! I could live without Bashou! I could leave him behind! I... could...
[He doesn't like saying any of this stuff, even if it isn't true.]

[The trio stops in place, Mayday first. It takes a moment of quiet mental calculation to suss out what Buson was truly saying. Weenis is perhaps the last to connect the dots and instinctively bristles at the face value version of Buson’s words, but Sarge places a hand on his shoulder and shakes her head. This wasn’t their discussion to intervene in.

Mayday, for her part, looks surprised, but not particularly upset. She looks at Buson with a curious and hard to decipher expression and then keeps walking along, heading towards the park, eyes straight in front of her.]

You really must be under the effects of something to tell me all that like this. [She chuckles.] I’m both really surprised and not surprised at all to hear that, though. Is that weird?

Like, I always knew you were different from me. Most Rockets are. I don’t know your circumstances, but I can guess. I imagine there are probably a lot of people in your shoes.

[Her eyes shift to look at him again.]

So. Maybe it’s a little late to ask, but why’d you join in the first place?

[He’s red in the face and a little breathless after all that shouting, nostrils flaring and chest heaving, but he’s glad Mayday seemed to see through the lies. He felt too ashamed to meet her Pokemon’s eyes.

He walks, quietly trailing after. When she asks, he lifts his head and smiles a bit wryly.]

Promise you won’t laugh?
I was stinkin’ rich, so I didn’t need a job. I could afford to be picky. S’not like I knowingly took a job as a bouncer at some Rocket-owned casino because I needed the money or anythin’…

My parents had me young an’ we were just livin’ in the lap of luxury… [He snorts at the ridiculousness of his own words and shakes his head.] I never had to pitch in…

Naturally, with my size an’ my skills, I totally didn’t stand out at all at my job, definitely not enough to be recruited…

Why would I laugh at that? Helping your family is very noble. [Mayday sounds very sincere about that.]

That’s no small part of why I joined, too, you know. Mum was opposed to the idea but I insisted. She was a higher ranking agent, but she was still a single mother, so as soon as I could start earning my keep by doing odd jobs for the Team, I did. [She was pretty young, so it was a lot of courier work. Relaying messages and making deliveries of questionable content.]

Anyway, we get a lot of recruits that way. Some of them really take to the lifestyle, but for others, it’s just a job. The pay is good if you can manage the work. It’s like, compartmentalization, innit? There’s no shame in that.

[He listens to her assessment and her own reasons and his expression shifts from wary to touched and even very fond. His gaze isn't pitying, now, just warm.]

... yeah... [He wasn't surprised either. That made sense.]

I—really hate you. [It's spoken too fondly to be that, really.]

[Compartmentalizing it's what he does best! Or maybe he's not actually that good at it, but he gets numb to it all, so he can keep going, even if he also keeps trying to relate to his enemies, even ones he's already decided to kill, and that can't be good for his mind, but he's a contradictory people person who's also a violent criminal.

Even so... he walks with a lighter step, feeling more at ease, now that he doesn't feel like he's hiding anything from Mayday, and even starts to smile. The small smile then takes on a wide, wolfish edge.]

Ever played in an amusement park before? I'm terrible at crane games, just mind-blowingly bad! I drop 'em every time! [He's saying it around a grin.]

I just can't catch anything!

[He might be playing it up a bit more for funnier lies to try and lighten the mood!]

[As she processes the statement, a tiny bit of color rises to Mayday’s cheeks unbidden. She wasn’t especially used to getting compliments and praise. It was… nice, though. She smiles at Buson with the sort of content sincerity usually reserved only for her Pokémon. Even if the situation that provoked it was unusual, she was glad he trusted her enough to confide in her about his feelings about the team. It seemed to have taken a weight off him. She answers his backwards bragging with a similarly lighthearted tone.]

Nah, can’t say I have. I gravitated more towards casinos if I was gonna throw my money away. Crane games, though, huh? That does seem like the sort of thing you’d be good at. So what’s the trick?

[What a warm, genuine smile! The kind of smile that made you want to do your best to see it again. It's encouraging, touching, and sweet. Something to be cherished and protected!

Well, for starters, y'gotta make sure the game is rigged if you wanna win.

Some of 'em are and will keep hanging onto whatever you caught, even when they reached the top. The ones that ain't rigged are designed to let everyone except maybe one or two people a day win.

The legit ones, the trick is all in the angles. It's nothin' like flyin' a plane.

Y'can just wing it without measurin' anythin' at all.

[He's shaking his head in amusement at his words. He'll just show Mayday what he means as soon as he spots one!!]

Check this out! The toys look pretty good quality, so it's probably rigged!

[While that's a true statement on its own, the Poke Dolls in front of them are kind of homely and plain. They're cute, but nothing to write home about.]

Which one'd you like? I gotta pick off the Poke Dolls at the bottom, they're the easiest to get, 'cause there's so many holdin' it down.
