[MINI EVENT] ☆T A N A B A T A☆

Those from the four regions of Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and Sinnoh will be very familiar with the sight of bamboo stalks that are left outside decorated with colorful and sparkly paper decorations. There are people gathering around, helping one another put up paper amulet of varying colors to tie around the bamboo branches. On each amulet is a single wish that’s been handwritten by someone.

One can only hope that their wish will be heard…

At night, there’s a surprise to be found: an alternate colored Jirachi is out dressed in what’s clearly a handmade costume. Around its neck, is a colorful paper chain made of sparkly origami paper.

Not only has Jirachi come to grant wishes, Miniors are out and about bright and colorful. They’ll be dancing around seemingly trying to invite people to come join them in the festivities.

((OOC: Happy Tanabata! In the morning is a general mingle post. But as the evening sets in and Jirachi appears, it will start granting the wish written on your amulet whether big or small -- wealth, a long life, or maybe a way to return home. You're free to catch Miniors too, and there's a slightly better chance of encountering a shiny one as well. Just be careful of the ones still in their shell or you might just get a rather explosive surprise...

This event can take place at any town, so feel free to specify a location!))

[Turo has, of course, never celebrated Tanabata before. It isn't a common holiday in Paldea! Nonetheless, he's aware of the general custom. He only has to observe the proceedings for a few minutes before figuring out what he's supposed to do! At the open tables, he writes a wish - not displaying it intentionally, but anyone who happens to be looking can probably see that it reads in absurdly neat handwriting:]

I wish for Arven to be safe and happy.

[That done, he starts folding a very precise origami star! It's fun to make things a little fancy! Noticing someone nearby, he doesn't immediately assume they were reading over his shoulder, just offers:]

I can show you how to fold one like this, if you like?

[When it comes to Jirachi...well, he can't deny he's curious! Mythical Pokemon have never been his research focus, and Jirachi sightings in particular are unheard of in Paldea. But who wouldn't be interested?

He maintains a respectful distance. It isn't until no one else is around that he approaches. It's a steel and psychic type. He's not sure about psychics in general, but this specific Pokemon...he can't imagine it doesn't know.

Very quietly, he asks:]

Do you think I'm doing something wrong, here?

[But you don't get direct answers to your moral quandaries quite that easily, do you?

Later on, he can be found down amongst the Minior. Turo hasn't had any Pokemon with him since arriving to the islands, but it seems like he's finally broken that streak; he's caught a brightly glowing violet Minior, and is carefully applying a few potions and watching its dark shell start to knit back together.]

Are you happy, being so far from home? Oh, but you're still a Pokemon, I suppose. There's plenty of your own kind still around. [.....] Do you have any name preferences?

[The Minior spins. Of course it does not???]

[ First scenario! ]

[Volo flinches, realising that he's probably too close. He didn't mean to make the gentleman uncomfortable, he was just intrigued by what he was doing with the paper!]

That looks very fancy, sir! I'm not sure I'll be able to do it, but I'd love to try, if you have the time to show me how!

[Although he's already hung up several copies of his wish - to meet Arceus, of course - Volo still has more in his pocket. He takes one out and smooths down the faint crinkles.]

[He hasn't been paying a lot of attention to who's hanging what! What a nice normal man doing a normal amount of Tanabata activities!]

Of course! It is not actually that complex - it only looks that way in the end. First, you tie one of these strips into a knot, like so.

[It ends up pretty pentagonal already!]

I see, I see...

[Volo follows along carefully, noting that he has to pull the knot tight to create the shape, but taking care not to be too harsh in case he tears the paper.]

Ah, the foundation of a star already! From something so simple!

It is just a matter of applied geometry!

[don't worry about it]

From there, all you have to do is fold the rest in, to form the pointed sides.

[Volo folds the rest of the paper strip with uncertain hands, constantly glancing at the finished one that Turo made before, to make sure he's doing it right. As he's folding, he repeats one of Turo's words slowly. ]

Yes...geometry...

[He does know what geometry is, though he can't easily draw a line between what he's doing now, and what he learned as a child.

The end result is nowhere near as neat as Turo's, but it's some kind of star. Volo thinks it's not bad for a first try, and he looks pleased with himself.]

There! I must ask, sir - is this something you invented? For you seem very wise! Or is it a recognised art form already? What do you call it?

No, no, I'm no artist. I suppose this is just a simple form of origami! That is the art of paper folding that originated in Johto and Kanto. You can use it to make far more complex paper sculptures, but I have never researched it extensively.

[let him just download some more tutorials from the island internet though and watch out!]

Origami. That's new to me! Do you come from Johto or Kanto...?

[Volo starts making another little star, just to prove to himself that he really knows how to do it now, and it wasn't just a fluke.]

Have you ever tried to make anything else? The library here has a lot of books, you know...I wonder if they would have a book about origami...with some pictures and instructions...

[Volo hasn't reached the stage of learning about the Internet yet. Or even computers.]

Oh, no. I'm from Paldea. This is just something I've seen.

[Only once or twice, admittedly. But with a memory like his, that's enough.]

They may! Paper cranes are a very popular origami creation - I believe I could make one of those as well. There are certain to be a number of video tutorials.

Paldea! The former empire...?

[Volo seems to have briefly forgotten that he travelled forward in time when he drifted to Ultern, and the stories he read about the Empire of Paldea back in Hisui were already quite dated.

Considering that the guy he's talking to looks very modern, to say the least, he might have found that to be a strange comment. Too late, Volo has already opened his mouth...]

I still don't know exactly what a video is, but if they can teach beautiful things like this, they sound very useful!

[That comment probably didn't help, either...]

[He smiles back, in his rather awkward way. He's never spent a great deal of time with Pokemon - certainly he never had any of his own, not in any real sense - but some of his fondest personal memories are of spending time with Miraidon.]

Oh - hello! That's...that is kind of you.

[He doesn't really know what he's doing here. For the most part, that's fine! It's an adventure! Just...he hasn't really been able to talk to anyone about it. Another reason he's long missed Miraidon.]
