Petite Étrangère

[In true Mairin-fashion, she absolutely must make a striking first impression!

By which we mean, she drops into Ultern, narrowly avoiding crashing into the sea by hanging off her overall suspenders from the bowsprit of a boat in Gateway Port.]

Salamè... [What a cool Pokemon! Mairin couldn't help but admire.

At the question, Mairin couldn't help but laugh awkwardly and shrug, Chespie also looking clueless.]

I... have no idea.

[Well, she was certainly casual about that. He stared before a small, faint smile tugged on his lips.]

At least you and your Pokemon are safe. ...I'm sure you noticed, but we're not in Kalos anymore.

[A-aww, she got him to smile! She blinked, then couldn't help but smile herself. He's cute like Alain can be too.]

Yup, I guess we're far from home, aren't we, Chespie?

[Chespie looked left and right, then nodded.]

Glad we ran into such a good-hearted guy, though! You know, you look like a friend of mine. Maybe you're distant relatives or something...

[She was certainly taking it easy...but maybe that was far better than how he had acted. Far too paranoid, and high strung. At the comment of being "good-hearted", X wasn't so sure about that.

He will however pause at the mention of looking like someone to her. As strange as an encounter it had been, he had met "Calem" but they were far identical to be labeled as distant relatives. So it couldn't have been about him.

X pondered how to respond while thinking of Y's strict rules but...this small information shouldn't hurt, right?]

I don't have any distant relatives that I know of... [Should he apologize-? No, that'd be weird.]

...what's your friend's name? And yours for that matter.

His name is Alain! And I'm Mairin.

[Stepping aside and gesturing to her Chespin with great flourish.]

And this here is Chespie! The most reliable Pokemon in Kalos.

[Definitely not a name he recognized, but it was good to keep it in mind. Just in case he came across anyone by that name, with a Kalosian accent to boot. At Mairin's introductions, he couldn't help but give a smile in return. Really, all of the friendliness he's experienced in Ultern was a breath of fresh air including hers.]

...I'm X.

[He'll glance down to Chespie, being reminded of when his Chesnaught had been a Chespin.]

He does look like a reliable partner. It's nice to meet you, Chespie.

[Chespie’s chest puffed with pride. He’s happy to meet you too, X.

Mairin looked curious at X’s unusual name.]
That’s a unique name! Does it mean something?

[No one really questioned his name before, as they simply accepted "X". Even if Mairin was rather nice thus far, he couldn't bring himself to give out his full name to her.]

It's a nickname my friends all call me by.

That's really cool! I give all my Pokemon nicknames too, I noticed your Charizard has one too! My Chespin's called Chespie and my Flabébé's called Bébé.

Never really got any nicknames myself.

[Mairin's fine with that, she's not trying to pry, she's just very, very chatty by nature.]

[X didn't seem to mind how talkative Mairin is. Instead, he nodded in acknowledgement.]

I give nicknames to my Pokemon too. I have a Chesnaught. His name is Marisso.

[Naming one of his other Pokemon shouldn't be a problem. Plenty of people gave names to their own, anyway. Although he hadn't been one to call his friends by a nickname...well. He can guess the flow of this conversation. He wasn't dense.]

[Eyes sparkling and hands clasped.]

I'd love one! But, hey, maybe it's supposed to be something you're given by someone who really gets to know you, y'know, so it fits, so maybe... you can hold that thought and someday, when the time is JUST right, you can give me a nickname!

It'll be more natural that way!

[Mentally, X already decided on a nickname for her but he'll keep that to himself for now.]

[Chespie also waved happily. These two wanted to get some exploring done!]

[He wasn't going to keep her, plus Chespin seemed like a reliable partner. He nods and waves her off.]

Alright. ...there's Pokemon Center straight ahead!

[He'll call out hoping she heard that. Well, Ultern seemed safe enough. She should be fine right?]

Got it!

[Yes, she can handle herself!!

... on her way, though, she tripped, stumbled, and nearly fell off the pier, although Chespie's vines quickly twined around her waist to pull her back to safety.

... well, she can mostly handle herself. After the brief scare, Mairin just laughed and carried on with Chespie.]

Ah...

[He visibly winced when he saw the way Mairin clumsily tripped. There's a relieved sigh seeing Chespie supporting her.

He's left awkwardly standing wondering whether she would be okay. Maybe...maybe he'll just. Go keep an eye on her...]
