Trip nodded, but feeling Elena nestle closer into him, he turned to watch her instead, stroking her head and back a few times, trying to comfort her, even giving a few awkward little pats.

Trip then looked back to Gold in his uncomfortable, hesitating explanation and felt he was omitting something, but was too shy to ask what. He did, however, look a bit suspicious.
